Christmas Cake 2007 by spiderdijon Christmas Cake 2007 by spiderdijon
My second Christmas cake - this event is pretty much a big deal in my cake world :D

This one didn't exactly abide by the rules of 'less is more' and isn't really in my usual style either, but my mum wanted the traditional santa and snow scene and I wanted some more contemporary themes so it all mishmashed in together - and if you can't go overboard at Christmas when can you?

Standard fruit cake covered in marzipan and royal icing, decorated with royal icing snowflakes and 'filigree' design, and blue dusting powder.

Incidentally, I also repainted santa and the little house in acrylics because they were looking quite old and battered :P

Thank you! There is always time to practise, and of course everyone will love you for it! I went through a phase where we had way too much cake in the house for us to eat cos I was constantly practising ;P

Thanks very much! Royal icing is something that doesn't get used so much any more, so I'm mounting a one-woman crusade to bring it back into regular usage :XD:

Thank you so much! You would have a hard time dipping your finger in this icing though, it's rock solid and HARD AS NAILS ;P It keeps for a long time...but impractical for people who like to keep their teeth :blushes: Tradition, eh??? Whoever thought of that :P

Thank you! It's thick royal icing (made with egg white) piped onto baking parchment, this icing sets really hard so when they're dry they just come away from the parchment and then you can stick em wherever you like with a little dab of fresh icing!
